Welcome to Wuhan Yangtze International School. You will find our school to be a place where students are happy and engaged in learning, and our teachers dedicated and committed to bringing the best out of your children.
WYIS started in 2003 with just seven students, and now it's grown to a full-service school offering education to children ages 3 to 18. We have since served hundreds of students from 26 different nations and territories.
I came to Wuhan from Singapore in 2014 and have two children currently enrolled in our school and one who graduated last year. As a parent, one of the things that gave me a deep impression when we first joined the school is its inclusivity and welcoming atmosphere. My children feel safe and accepted at WYIS, and they are motivated to be excellent in what they do.
As your admissions guide, my aim is to make the admissions process clear and straightforward so you can experience a smooth transition to our community. Please take some time to look through our website and become familiar with who we are and what we are about. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at admissions@wyischina.com. I will be happy to take you on a personalized school tour when you are next in Wuhan.

GETTING ENROLLED
NEW STUDENTS
The school considers the following as essential for admission:
- The student must possess a foreign (non-Chinese) passport. As per Chinese law, we cannot admit children who are citizens of mainland China. At least one parent and the student must also have a foreign passport, which must be presented at the time of application.
- Demonstrate age-appropriate adequacy in the English language and educational skills as determined by an interview, examination, and/or educational records.
- A medical exam must be completed for all new students.
- All forms and paperwork must be completed. Note: All documents must be in or translated into English.
- Enrollment fee must be paid before students are placed on the class roster.
- Meet with the teacher and/or principal if deemed necessary
Starting March 1, 2023, you can apply online for the 2023/2024 school year by filling out the online application form found here.
Note: If you previously applied to WYIS and were not successful or were placed on a waiting list, it is necessary that you resubmit your application for the new school year.
RETURNING STUDENTS
- Complete online re-enrollment.
- Medical examination signed by a doctor for students entering grades 1, 6, and 9.
- Pay all re-enrollment fees by the date specified by the Finance Office.
WAITING LISTS
Enrollment is based on a first-come basis, but in the event of close submissions, priority is given to the following:
- Children of LDi staff and associates
- Eligible siblings of students already attending
- Students with higher levels of English abilities
If a student has passed the necessary admission requirements but there is no space available, he/she may be placed in a waiting pool. Students will be added to this pool according to the enrollment priority listed below. This waiting pool is dissolved at the end of the school year and parents need to re-apply if they wish to be considered for enrollment for the following school year. We encourage parents to look for other educational options while their child is in the waiting pool.
NON-DISCRIMINATION
The school does not discriminate on the basis of race/ethnic origin or gender in its admissions or in any school programs.
POLICIES & PROCEDURES
Academic Testing & Interview
Once a test date is decided upon, a student will undergo a series of reading, written, spoken and listening tests to determine if they are academically and socially ready for the grade level for which they are applying. This written assessment will measure the ability of a student to read and write in English, and the interviews will measure the student’s ability to listen and speak in English. Both parts of the admissions assessment may require other academic skills as well.
After the admissions assessment is completed, the parents will be informed of the results via email and phone. Upon acceptance, any ELL recommendations and placements will be made as necessary.
The school does not practice acceleration of students (skipping a grade) in cases of high achievement. New students who are non-native English speakers may be placed at a lower grade level at the Principal’s discretion. Students will not be placed in a certain grade, class, or level based on the parent’s preference for a certain teacher.

Wuhan Yangtze International School strives to provide an excellent education to all students, supporting each individual’s needs. As such, it is vital that we understand the specific needs of the student, in order to prepare and teach effectively.
WYIS asks that parents inform the school if there are any known learning or social-emotional concerns. It is important that WYIS confirms our ability to meet the needs of these students prior to admissions. In some situations, the school may not have the resources necessary for successful learning. In these instances, we will commmunicate with parents early on in the admissions process.
WYIS does not offer boarding or home-stay facilities for students. We believe parents are ultimately responsible for the education of their children and that cooperation between the school and the home is necessary to ensure that students reach their fullest potential. As a result, and in the best interest of the student, WYIS has established the following guidelines concerning residency of parents:
- At least one parent or guardian must have full-time residency in Wuhan or a nearby community.
- Guardians are only permitted to function in lieu of parents in unusual circumstances with the permission of the school administration.
- If both parents of a Grade 9-12 student must leave Wuhan during the school year but would prefer to leave their child(ren) in the school until the end of the semester, an appropriate guardian must be appointed and school approval must be obtained as soon as possible.
- An Ayi does not constitute an appropriate guardian for a child.
Tuition Payments and Refund Policy
Wuhan Yangtze International School determines tuition on an annual basis, which is assessed at the time of registration. It is payable in accordance with an approved payment plan. Late fees will be assessed where appropriate.
Parents may choose a payment plan in correspondence with the finance office. Parents must take all necessary measures to pay all school fees. If a student applies and is accepted into the school some time after the commencement of the school year, tuition will be charged for the full quarter of entry and all subsequent quarters.
Tuition payments for students who withdraw will only be refunded for quarters not attended. Once a quarter is started, full tuition for that quarter must be paid. Report cards, diplomas, and transcripts will not be released if payments are not complete. No portion of tuition shall be refunded for a student dismissed by expulsion or for disciplinary reasons.
No tuition payments can be transferred from one student to another.
Delinquent Accounts
A tuition account must be current to within sixty (60) days by the end of the semester in order for a child to continue in school the second semester. All tuition accounts must be paid in full before a child can re-enter the school. In the event that payment has not been received in full within sixty (60) days after the due date, the student(s) may be removed from the school. The terms and conditions for payment must be fully and promptly met.
